⚠️ Bear Awareness
Romania holds the largest brown-bear population in Europe — approximately 8,000 animals. Carry bear spray (buy it locally — it cannot fly as hand luggage or checked baggage on most airlines). Store food in a dry bag hung at least 4 m from the ground and 2 m from the trunk. Do not cook near your tent.
The Făgăraș is the roof of Romania — a 70 km ridge above 2,000 m with no roads crossing it, no huts above the tree line (only a couple of basic cabane at either end), and weather that arrives without warning from the south. It is one of the wildest multi-day ridges in Europe, and almost unknown outside Romania.
I've wild-camped this ridge twice — and both times storms forced me off the mountain early. That is not a deterrent; it is the point. The Făgăraș rewards flexibility and punishes rigid itineraries. Build rest days into your plan and watch the weather the evening before every ridge section.

From the trail
"There are no taps on the ridge. I often filled from melting snow patches well into July, and filtered every stream crossing regardless — the livestock grazing below the snowline is reason enough. I saw plenty of bear sign — scat, prints in soft ground — but never a bear. That said, I hung food every night without exception."
The EXPED Ultra 8R sleeping mat was the single piece of gear I was most glad I brought. At altitude on a ridge with no insulation between you and frozen ground, an R-value below 5 is not enough. Cold ground steals heat faster than cold air.
Weather & Seasons
Both times storms forced me off the Făgăraș — full sun to hail in under an hour. The window is July to early September; even then, electrical storms can build every afternoon. The evening forecast is your most important navigation tool.
Build schedule flex in: know the escape route from every camp, carry an offline map (Mapy.cz covers the Carpathians in detail), and accept that the mountain will choose your rest days for you.

Is wild camping legal in the Făgăraș Mountains?
Yes — wild camping is legal above the tree line in Romania. Below 1,800 m or inside protected natural reserves, you need permission or should use designated sites. On the main Făgăraș ridge you are mostly well above the tree line, so camping is unrestricted. Always leave no trace.
Are there bears, and do I need bear spray?
Romania has the largest brown-bear population in Europe — roughly 8,000 bears. Encounters on the main ridge are uncommon but real. Bear spray is strongly recommended. Buy it locally (Decathlon Romania or outdoor shops in Sibiu / Brașov) as aerosols cannot be carried in aircraft hand luggage or checked baggage on most airlines.
What if the weather turns?
It will. Both times I've been on the Făgăraș the weather changed in under an hour — full sun to hail. Build schedule flex into your plan: know the nearest valley escape route from each camp, and do not summit-push in electrical storm conditions. The ridge has no shelter above the tree line except your tent.
